Mortice Chisel
Made in Germany, these mortice chisels have substantial, 14mm thick blades to withstand the heavy blows required to cut deep mortices. The finely ground blades measure 170mm from tip to bolster and are fractionally relieved from tip to shoulder to reduce sidewall friction. The blades are made from a premium quality chrome vanadium tool steel, which has high resistance to metal fatigue, to withstand the constant use of a mallet when chopping out and to aid levering out waste.
Each blade is hardened to Rc61 along its entire length, resulting in a blade that will hold and retain a sharp, fine edge, over the life of the tool, without becoming brittle when sharpened. The blade and tang are forged from one piece of steel, which is seated deeply into the chisel handle for strength and durability. The hornbeam handle, selected for its straight grain, is tapered & contoured from 45mm to 30mm in diameter and allows for a very comfortable and powerful hold. A sturdy steel band and ferule support the handle, preventing it from splitting or spreading when repeatedly hit with a mallet. A shock absorbing leather washer sits between the handle and the bolster on the blade to minimise kick back in the hand. These chisels have an overall length of 330mm. ©
