Edge Planes
Manufactured to British Standards, Rutlands® hand planes are recommended by discerning cabinetmakers and carpentry instructors for their superb construction, finish and performance. Using world leading manufacturing techniques, each precision ground plane represents a serious alternative to the premium brands produced in North America. The renowned design has a screw mechanism that easily allows the blade to be varied in depth relative to the sole to change the depth of cut. An edge plane is designed to precisely and squarely trim the edges of stock or jointing boards and due to the low angle blade ensures fine planing on both cross and end grain at exactly 90° to the face.
No 95 Edge Plane
This edge plane is designed for right handed use, but can easily be used by left handers. The integral 90° precision machined fence ensures the planing always occurs squarely to the face of stock. Two grub screws at either side of the blade keeps it from moving if it hits a knot and it has a fine pitch blade adjustment thread for improved blade setting accuracy. Different angles can be planed if required by adding home made wooden blocks to the inner face of the fence. A 32mm wide, 25° bevelled blade that is skewed by 30° is seated at 12° within the plane, giving an effective angle of 37° for fine planing of both cross and end grain. The plane has an overall length of 165mm and weighs 850g.
Materials & Manufacturing
The plane body features unbreakable CR40 steel castings which are precision machined to ensure the sole is flat and square to the fence. It has been finished in an epoxy powder coat for protection and durability. The plane is fitted with a T10 high carbon steel tool blade which can take a keen edge, and that has been hardened to RC60-64 for maximum edge retention. The blade is held in position by a polished stainless steel lever cap and knurl screw. ©
