No 97 1/2 Chisel Plane
Chisel Planes
Manufactured to British Standards, Rutlands® hand planes are recommended by discerning cabinetmakers and carpentry instructors for their superb construction, finish and performance. Using world leading manufacturing techniques, each precision ground plane represents a serious alternative to the premium brands produced in North America. A chisel plane has a noseless shape with a body width blade making them ideal planes for cleaning up and finishing a project. The design makes it the perfect choice for removing dried glue, cutting dowels and plugs flush to the surface of the wood, tidying up dovetail joints and even cleaning up rabbets and grooves. There is also a screw mechanism that easily allows the blade to be varied in depth relative to the sole to change the depth of cut.
Standard Chisel Plane
The standard chisel plane is sized for delicate and precision work and is ideal for use on smaller projects and in tighter spaces. It can be used with one hand with ultimate control. The plane has an overall length of 115mm, is 44mm wide and weighs 0.6kg.
Materials & Manufacturing
The plane body features an unbreakable CR40 steel casting which is precision machined to ensure the sole is flat and square to the sides. The plane is fitted with a T10 high carbon steel tool blade which can take a keen edge, and that has been hardened to RC60-64 for maximum edge retention. The 15° low bed angle combined with the 25° blade bevel gives a cutting angle of 40° for exceptional end grain cutting performance. The blade is secured with a stainless steel cap and there is a chipbreaker to ensure a chatter free cut. The plane is completed with an oiled, solid bubinga knob that sits at an angle to ensure a comfortable grip in the hand. ©
